Digital broadcast has always been the target since 1998 and there will NO change to this specification.
SD (standard definition) is the minimum standard for all digital broadcast.
HD (High definition) is being offered by all the commercial TV stations in Australia.
For e.g. Channel 7 is the SD Channel, Channel 70 or 77 is the HD channel: 9 is SD, 90 is HD: 10 is SD, 12 is HD: 2 is SD, 20/22/23 is HD.

Channel 10 starting from 26 March 2009 will be offering a new Sports Channel 1 broadcasted in HD only.
So now you can see all those hair follicles and sweaty pores in fine detail (like in the HD TV article I emailed you....hmmmmm).

If you still have an older type analog TV (big backside with tube), you need to get a digital TV soon or you will not be able to watch any TV at all.
I think the dateline is suppose to be end of this year when all analog broadcasts will be turned off and only digital signals will be used.

Now, Full HD (1980 x 1080) is one more grade up from HD (1366 x 768) which is one grade up from SD (704 x 576).
Full HD currently can be viewed only from a Blu-ray DVD via a Blu-ray player OR from a source like a Full HD cam recorder OR still photos from your Digital Camera.
However, your normal DVD can also be "upscaled" to almost 1980 x 1080 resolution if played on a Blu-ray player.

BTW, forget Plasmas - the really good ones like Pioneer are too expensive and out of fashion.
And get the Full HD TV (LCD/LED) sets with tuners built-in otherwise you have to buy a seperate set top box to get HD.

Confused yet?
Time to seriously look into this within the next 3 months.
The best time to buy is at the end of financial year (30 June) sales.
