Why would an Eastsider go all the way to Westlake when you could go to Willard Park pool for free? The deep end was a dangerous 6 foot 6 inches.

I remember going to several dances at Westlake. The telephone company had their company dances there and I dated a girl who worked for the phone company. At that time people could smoke in the dance hall. When the smoke got so thick you could'nt breath, they would role back the roof to let the smoke escape. Is Westlake still in business or has it long since closed?

Randy, you're right about the Willard Park Pool. We had a whole 6 feet of water and that was if the water level was high. The biggest danger you had was hitting your head on the bottom when you dove in. At one time, they held beauty contests where the girls would walk out and back on the diving board. I never saw a girl fall in the water but there were many times when one would come close. Old Willard Park is nothing today like it once was when we lived in the neighborhood.

Best wishes to all, keep in touch.

Sam

You are lucky...at Christian Park which is the one closest to where I grew up...only had a sprinkler pool, thus our trips to Ellenberger, Willard, Brookside, Longacre, Westlake....I think that about covers it.

West lake park is now a large appartment complex. The lake is still there I think, but the dance paladium, swimming pool and drive in theatre are all gone now.
