We are coming to Grantham, England on July 2 to a reunion at Harlaxton Castle with the University of Evansville group. I did not graduate from U of E but the wife did. One of our tours while we are there is to the American War Cemetery at Madingley and we hope to take a side trip to Normandy before we come home. There is a war cemetery there also that overlooks the beaches where over 14,000 American soldiers died.

Warren, looked up Grantham in the maps and find it is about a 2 hour drive almost due north of where I am (in Lower Benefield). Hope you enjoy the reunion - at a castle no less!

I looked up the Madingley Cemetarey and find that it is in or near Cambridge. It is so well taken care of from the pictures.

The American Cemetary in Normandy is at Colleville I believe and overlooks Omaha Beach. I hope to visit it too. I should be there about June 30.

I am really looking forward to the trip to England and the castle should be an experience. The Harlaxton castle was used in the film Patton. It is suppose to be a beautiful place. You can see it at www.UE.edu. Guess we will be passing each other over the Atlantic somewhere.

Sorry. Wrong website address. You can read and see all about the Harlaxton Castle at www.ueharlax.ac.uk.

Warren, the Harlaxton Castle is something - just looked up that website; the English campus for Univ. of Evansville, marvelous. I have been to Burghley House, near here, and it is just beautiful. I can't believe these castles, and these villages. I find England absolutely beautiful and so agricultural - fields of wheat and rape everywhere. I hope to visit Rockingham Castle which is also near here.
Am going this Friday to visit Mousehole Forge in Sheffield. I will be in Normandy July 9,10,11,and part of 12. Am doing bus tour of beaches, and American Cemetary on July 10 and 11. Maybe we will see each other there.

Well, unfortunately we will not be able to go to Normandy. We will have a side trip while at Harlaxton to the American War Cemetery at Madingley on July 7. It will be so funny to celebrate the 4th of July in England. I am really looking forward to the trip. This is a trip sponsored by the University of Evansville alumni.

Had great time in England with my daughter and family.

Made it to Normandy - Omaha and Utah beaches. Saw Sainte Mere Eglise where John Steele hung from the church steeple, Angoville-au-Plain (where two medics treated some 80 soldiers, both U.S. and German, in a church), German bunkers, Waco glider, Colleville U.S. Cemetary (Teddy Roosevelt Jr. and his brother Quentin are buried side-by-side [Quentin is the only non D-D invasion soldier buried there]), Pointe du Hoc (where the U.S. Rangers had to climb up that vertical cliff), a German cemetary, and the hedgerows, among a lot of other places.

We walked on top of Pointe du Hoc and viewed all the craters and went into a bunker or two. A beautiful view from there.

Looked at the hedgerows, very interesting and impressive - no wonder the soldiers were stopped.

The Colleville U.S. Cemetary was beautiful, and sad. It was very quiet, hardly anyone talking.

If I get back to England, I again will take this tour.

The Normandy visit sounds great. I wish we could have gone over to Normandy when we were at Harlaxton. The War Cemetery at Madingley England was a touching sight to see also. So many young men were buried there after D-Day and the awful fact is that there are more unknowns buried there than those that were known. We got to participate in lowering the flag while taps was being played.
