Subject: Tech Trivia (Campus Sidewalks)

Triva Question:

What year were cement sidewalks procured for Tech's campus? So "little precious" could walk from building to building with getting their shoes all wet and muddy.

Before 1923... I never heard my mother complain about wet or muddy shoes from class changes at Tech.

I have no idea but would venture a guess if that is allowed. How about the WPA days? Around 1931 or so.

Where O' where has our Tech guru gone? Are we ever to learn the correct answer to this burning question?

Tech To Have New Walks

Rainy days will have less effect on the footwear of the Tech Students in the near future!
Under the direction of H. F. Osler, superintendent of buildings and grounds for the Indianapolis Public schools, work has been begun on cement walks which will be laid between buildings on the campus.
The following walks are planned: One, sixteen feet wide, between the fountain and the Artillery building: another, seven feet in width, to start at the fountain, curve northwest, then to run parallel with the east side of the Annex; the third, also seven feet wide, to extend from the fountain to the northwest corner of the Arsenal; and the fourth one to run from the northwest corner of the Arsenal to the lunch room. The walks on both the east and south sides of the Artillery building will be widened. The Drafting department has furnished the drawings for the work and the trigonometry class in surveying will set the stakes and give the levels.

(I’m nearly certain the Annex was demolished to make room for the Morgan Hall building in the late 1950’s. Also the Artillery Building was demolished to make room for the new cafeteria/music building in about 1964)

Randy,
You are correct. The Annex and also the old Electric Building were demolished in 1956 to make room for Morgan Hall. I believe Morgan Hall was opened for classes in time for the Fall Semester 1957. The 1957 Yearbook (pg. 99) includes photographs of the site.

The campus has certainly changed over the years. I'm still sorry to see that the Artillery Building was demolished but times change and Tech is a school and not a museum.

Keep in touch,

Sam

A good start would be to scroll down and click on: Campus Photographs, Winter on the Tech Campus; then on down to the section "A Look Back", click on "to the Beginning", "to 1918", "to 1929", etc; then on down to the Section on "Sketchbook Programs" and click on those topics. All photos can be downloaded from the website.
