Subject: Tech Amateur Radio Club, W9HFQ

Does anyone remember the radio club that used to be in Room 49 of the old Electric building, which stood on the site of the present Morgan Hall?

Gerry Bramblett, W9POF, an electric shop teacher, was the trustee. Of the members, the only names I recall are Chester Crump, K9ADJ, and twins Lowell and Knoll (sp) Atkinson. I don't recall their call signs, but at least one of them attended Purdue University.

Since I was just a Junior-High kid, I got a lot of encouragement from the older members. I got my novice license, KN9LAY, while a mmember of the club. I still have an Extra-Class license, but I am not currently active.

I recall that the station equipment, much of which was built by the members, was located in a massive rack. I think there were two rather high poles located just west of the Electric Building that supported the antenna, which was some type of dipole fed by open-wire transmission line running from the west-looking window of Room 49.

There are a couple of repeaters using the W9HFQ license, but the trustee is located in Schauk, OH so I am not sure if the club is now active.

I too was a member of the Radio Club and all that you wrote brought back many memories. Thanks for having such a good recall. I had forgotten the call sign of the station and Mr. Bramblett's name. He was an excellent teacher and encouraged me to get my novice license also, WN9ZSE. I am no longer active with ham radio but I had so many wonderful experiences with my Heath transmitter and Hallicrafters (I believe S38C) while at Tech.

It's strange how you run across someone from the past! There are some active hams from the class of '58 who keep in touch.
W4IA, me...ex K9ATS; Noel Atkinson, W9FR and ex K9DJN; Lowell Atkinson, K9DJM; Chet Crump, K9ADJ, and Sam Baine, now W4KUM.

Noel, Lowell, and Chet live in the Indy area. Sam is in Florida, and I'm in Atlanta. The last time we all got together was in 2008 at the 50th anniversary.

The school has changed now only in its usage. It still looks the same! Google Arsenal Tech...they have a nice website, and the alumni group is very active with their own site.

The ham gear is gone from the school, but not the memories!

Yes, we will always have memories. So much has changed and time marches on but we will always believe we had the best of times and 73's to you.

After 42 or so years, I decided to get back on the air. Last time was on 2 meter fm, before that in the early 60s on HF. Actually, my wife decided I needed a hobby. So last weekend I passed my extra class exam and this week picked up a Yaesu FT-2000D (will need a PHD to use the damn thing, never saw so many controls in my life.) It came without a power supply or mic, so I dug up a couple in the garage. Also picked up a vertical antenna, gotta get it up soon.
If you guys keep in touch on the air, let me know what freq.-I may drop in and surprise you all.
My God, how the hobby has changed, the test didn't have a single tube question!
