Joe Ward Sexson 77, of Indianapolis, died April 30, 2011. Joe was born March 29, 1934 in Indianapolis, to Ward and Ruth Aiken Sexson; they preceded him in death as did his brother Don. Joe was a graduate of Arsenal Tech High School where he was a star athlete. Joe was named Mr. Basketball in 1952 after leading Tech to a runner up finish in the Indiana High School Basketball State Finals and winning the Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude. He went onto Purdue University where he continued to excel at basketball having been team captain and team MVP averaging 19.1 points a game his senior season; he finished his career at Purdue with 1095 points. Mr. Sexson served as head baseball coach at Purdue from 1960-1977 and as an assistant basketball coach there before leaving to become head basketball coach at Butler University; a position held from 1978 to 1989 during which he was twice named MCC Coach of the Year. Joe is a member of the Zionsville United Methodist Church, the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, the Purdue University Hall of Fame, and was widely known as an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Donna Parrish Sexson; his sons, Rick (Ellen), Dan, and Mark (Judy); his brothers, Jon and David; his grandchildren, Ryan, Travis, Ali, Bethany, Charlsie, Thad, Casey, Bo, and Emily; his great-grandchildren, Kayden, Ely, and Alex. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Zionsville United Methodist Church, 9644 Whitestown Road, Zionsville. The funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, May 6, 2011 also at Zionsville United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery, Zionsville. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Indiana Chapter, 8440 Woodfield Crossing, Suite 201, Indianapolis, IN 46240-4300. Joe was my hero in every sport at Tech and known to be a clean/wholesome/likeable guy. Knew he had gone to coaching, lost track of him. Sorry to hear of his passing.
