Subject: Back to Basics, Part 3: Joe

**Off-camera.**

Matt Thornhill drives down a small road with very uniform looking houses on both sides. Two things become obvious rather quickly: First, Thornhill is driving on a military instillation. Second, Thornhill is lost.

Accursed houses and streets all look just the same...where is that stupid roa--AH!

Finally finding the road his mentor and friend, Joe Wilburn, lives on, Thornhill turns off and starts looking for the correct house. Finding the house almost immediately, he pulls in the driveway and turns off the ignition.
Thornhill gets out of the car, walks up to the door, and rings the doorbell. Joe Wilburn, a man of 55 years but looking at least 15 younger, opens the door. Wide eyed, he looks at the young man before him and shouts MATTY, IS THAT YOU? Joe opens the door and invites Matt in.
After a little bit of smalltalk and catching up, Joe gets down to business.

Joe: Matty, you know it's good to see you, boy...but I'm sure you didn't just come in to town to stop by and chat. I know you too well...what's wrong?

Thornhill: I need you to put me through training.

But you've alre--

CHANGE me. I need a FIRE! I need to improve. I have SO much room for improvement. I NEED to improve. I have all of these ideals, all of these motives, all of these goals. I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH to accomplish my goals, or to stand up for my ideals. I need MORE! I need to be better. I need you to help me.

Are you sure? You realize the risks involved...the strict training regimen that you'll have to adhere to...you WON'T be the same person going as you were coming...

I know. And that's what I want. I want to be able to rise to the top. I've always been at the top of whatever I was doing...I want to be the best again. I want to one day, be able to look back on my career here in the CWF, and say...you know, that kid was one of the best the CWF has ever seen...

I'm not there yet. Nowhere close. And I know it will take some major hard work. You've got at least two weeks with me, sir. Work the hell out of me...make me into the One Man Army that I'll need to be to be successful. Have you been following my career?

I have. Is this all because of that group Stevens has going with him right now...what are they...the SINdicate?

Partly. I realize that I'm going to have to be on top of my game if they ever come hunting for me. And for them to come hunting for me, my career is going to have to be on the way up. It's kind of a catch-22. If my career flounders, I've got nothing to worry about...they aren't going to waste their time with losers. If I start to get good, then I've got to watch my back. I want to get so good, they're looking over their shoulders instead of the other way around. You have to help me.

Ok...here's the deal. We'll start bright and early Monday morning. In the meantime, get some rest, go visit your family, poke around town. And meet me at the OC at 0600 Monday morning. Got that?

The two men shake hands as the scene fades to black.
