This arrest is for something that happened January 9, 2005. It was during a period of time that my husband had a manic episide (a symptom of bi-polar disorder) where he ran wild from December 29, 2004 till January 12, 2005 when he was arrested in Iowa for what he just finished his prison time on.
The manic episode was brought on by attempting to get him relief from his pain his spinal stenosis causes him. He was getting steroid shots in his spine...but he wasn't taking his anti-psychotic medication.
Regulating your meds on your own is also another symptom of bi-polar disorder. But, his psychiatrist knew he wasn't taking them, and he knew Shawn was going to be getting the steroid shots and didn't say word one to me. The psychiatrist was told verbally and in writing when Shawn was in the right frame of mind to inform me of any possible problems or changes that Shawn might be doing...and he didn't.
The doctor that gave him the shots after hearing the story said that it has not happened to his knowledge, but he wouldn't put it past the treatment for this type of thing to happen.
I finally got hold of Shawn's court-appointed attorney. I called every hour on the hour Monday, making sure that I took up a small chunk of the receptionist's time, and finally told the receptionist that I would continue to call every hour until my phone call was returned....I got a call in 36 minutes.
Yes...what my husband did was illegal, but it was triggered from a drug given to him by a doctor. It is a common side effect to a person with bi-polar issues, and usually quite costly to them having to "clean up" any mess they created while on it...
I told this attorney that I was going to be a thorn in his side during this time, and the attorney seemed quite pleased that I could supply all the information along with names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all doctors involved. With any luck, he will do is job, and get documentation from these doctors...otherwise, my husband could be locked up anywhere from 30 years to life on this charge.
