Heather,
Yes, a lot of addicts have personality disorders -this could be one reason they end up addicts. Though, I'm inclined to wonder with some of them -which came first the chicken or the egg.
When my ex was going to therapy (yet actively using meth), he was diagnosed with Boderline Personality Disorder. Again, not sure this diagnoses was due to his meth behavior or this disorder contributed to his addiction. Either way, I found the information to be insightful when he was going through his recovery phase. Of course, as you know that was short lived. Here is a link to the Boderline Personality Disorder.
P.S. Seems my ex has been re-appearing in the world. Reaching out to his best friends whom he lost touch with when he got back on drugs. That combined with me running into him at the store a few weeks back and him looking healthy makes me wonder if he is trying to get back on track again. Mixed emotions as of course I wish him the best and hope he can live a productive and healthy life -but also worries me that with the holidays coming up he is going to try to connect with our daughter. Grrrr..
