Joe,
If your friend is serious, they wouldn't "write" their own recovery but submit to what is needed. Christian based or not should not be a deterrent. In my experience, a Christian-based program is much better in many ways because of the humility and submission but most of all because the addict needs to know they are powerless and needs to find a Higher Power but if that H.P. is self, guess what? They go right back to what they've been worshipping - themselves and the meth. It's a matter of realizing that they are NOT greater than anyone or thing at this point. I have seen people pick & choose their treatment facilities and then find many excuses on why it doesn't work, etc. These are the ones that keep relapsing.
One guy I met had been through 7 programs totalling about 7 years or so and he couldn't stay sober until he turned to God. I'm sure there are many others out there that can beg to differ but I believe that only in humility can the recovery begin.
God Be with you,
Hulalea
