Jason,

Hello there & good day. I am a LAKA & have had the Ertl procedure - personally I think it's the best thing since sliced bread! As for your question, I am going to be listing some links below for addtional information pertaining to the Ertl procedure in general & other's personal stories about the methods employed for a successful outcome. In ALMOST every case - it is best to remove as much extra hardware from the human body as possible - as this material attracts foreign bodies (i.e. infections and the like...) to itself & 'could' cause problems down the road. If at all possible, it's generally a good idea to get back to 'human' as possible. I have spent the last 22 months in & out of surgeries & dealing with infections that have attached themselves to the hardware. At my most saturated point, I had 37 ounces of metal in my arm - I now have less then 10. I would read the information from the links listed below & make an educated decision about it. Another thing to consider is that once the Tib & Fib heal together with the bone bridge - they will be stronger & more flexable without the metal hardware in there than with a stiff metal spike in there that doesn't give. Just a thought... I do not know your situation or circumstances, but thought I would give my 2 cents worth...

Cheers,
Richard G Smith

Here is another article that I came across - more of a story about someone who underwent the Ertl procedure rather than a detailed explanation, but I thought it was a good read.
