There are Two organizations which established minimum requirements in order to be "Certified" by their criteria. One is the ABC and the other is the BOC. Once a practitioner has completed the minimum education and agrees to abide by their code of ethics he/she may make aplication to the boards for certification.

Once accepted they may use the designation to follow:
CP: Certified Prosthetist
CO: Certified Orthotist
CPO: Certified Prosthetist / Orthotist
Board Eligible: Has met the requirements to be certified.

So what's it all mean to us the end user amputee???
Not a blessed thing. A practitioner does not have to be certified in order to make you a quality limb. Certification does not imply that the practitioner is in any way better qualified to make prosthetics or holds himself to a higher moral standard. It simply means he has met those minimum requirements to be accepted by those organizations. The best prosthetist is the one who makes the limb that works for you. They are all unique individuals with their own style.
