As a point on courses - Gareth is one of the lecturers at Farnborough Tech on the motor vehicle maintenence course.
He's been customising and working on VWs for years and has worked at Farnborough VW centre. I'm not sure if he teaches on the evening course, but if he does, he'd be the ideal instructor for you.
I learned about the mechanical side of things as I went along really... before I built the spyder I was really a complete novice - the good thing about the old VWs is their overall simplicity!
You can always come down to the club and meet the rest of us lot too - we're always happy to advise/help. You don't have to actually own a VW to come down the pub!
I really reccomend you go to the Volksworld Show at Sandown Park, Esher this weekend too - it'll fill you with ideas for what you're looking for from a bus and there's a big 'For Sale' area in the car park too!

Take the plunge, you'll wonder why it took you so long!

Cheers,

Timo
