Magazines are a good start, as are web forums! There's no substitute for real people though. Speak to people at your local club, make sure you know what to look for, problem areas, where they rot, etc.
Find your local aircooled VW specialist - they are often good people to keep an eye out for a good one for you, and are generally enthusiasts themselves, so quite open to a chat about what to look for when buying too! Most of them are happy to look over a prospective purchase for you, as it is likely to be them doing any major maintenance required (unless you're rather handy with a welding torch yourself, of course)!
