The "proper" way to sort this is to de-coke the pre-heaters on the inlet manifold - they are the little pipes which connect to the exhaust manifold and connect to the inlet manifold. Also make sure the warm air pipe from the air-filter to the exhaust is in good condition and the flap is set to take air from there during the winter - some bugs have a cable which changes the air-flow from warm to cold as the engine warms up!

The other way is that you can get a little heated jacket for the inlet manifold, which helps a lot with this problem (but doesn't completely solve it) - it's called an "IMDU" (Inlet Manifold De-icing Unit).

Another way is twin carbs, as the short manifolds on top of the heads warm up really quickly - but not really reccomended for 1200 bugs!
