Can anyone explain why the after-action report written by Lt. Col. Young following Operation Utah was written under the letterhead of the 3rd Marine Division rather than the First Marine Division?
I have also discovered that my service record indicates that I was transferred to the 3rd Marines from the 1st Marines on 17 February 1966, although I don't recall that, and my mailing address did not change. I do recall that at that time I was transferred from H&S company, 3/1/1 to Lima Company, 3/1/1.
Here's one possible clue: Just a couple of days before Operation Utah, Lima Company, and presumably the other 3/1/1 companies, were told that we would spend the rest of our tour in Vietnam guarding the airfield at Da Nang. At that time, Da Nang was controlled by 3/1/3.
