Subject: A song for the troops, vets, their families

I support all our people in uniform and I'm deeply grateful to all who have served. I'm very sorry that the government, at the behest of the wealthy and powerful, make your lives more and more difficult, taking away your benefits and your access to healthcare. They take advantage of everyone who is not rich and powerful, but it is especially egregious when it is done to the very people we should all be down on our knees thanking for everything we have! It is so ironic that you who give everything are offered so little in return, while those who never do anything in their lives but take and take get rewarded for doing nothing but taking. I've written a song for all of you. I'll insert the current draft of it below. I'm working on music, but if anyone out there wants to set it to music and sing it, they are welcome to. They are welcome to record it and share it with others as much as they want -- even on the internet. You all have my permission. I'm not looking to make any money on it. I hope you all enjoy the song. If you find it objectionable or bad or whatever, please let me know. I've tried to do my best with it, but I'd like to hear any feedback you might have, negative or positive. Here it is --

The Greatest Heartbreak of them All
(Tim Lyons - Draft 4 -- 11/13/03)

Now I love our folks in uniform
How can I thank them for what they've done?
I swear right now I'd wash the feet
Of each and every one.

They are brave, our heroes our security
Among the best we know
Yet the mighty want to treat them
Like cheap stuffing in a gun.

This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
And though I've known a few
And I know you have too
I know none to compare.
This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
This is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.

They fought King George to win our rights
They fought the Kaiser hard and long
They fought to keep Korea free
They fought the Viet Cong.

They've fought to stop Al Quaeda
They've put an end to the Taliban
They've put a stop to Sadaam's reign
God bless each woman and each man.

And when I think of those who sacrificed themselves
In the fields of World War II,
I know they did not give their lives
For the greedy, grabby few.

This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
When I see the headstones
I feel in my bones
A betrayal of their trust
This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
This is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.

What were they fighting for?
Why did so many find their graves?
What were they fighting for?
Not to take us all back to a time
Of royalty and slaves!

Who pays the price?
Who reaps the gain?
Who refuses ever to serve?
Full grown infants
Demanding more and more
Well I'd be the first to tell them
That they've got some f**king nerve.

Oh, but their rights must be honored
Their dreams must be fulfilled
And one thing's for sure
By God, their children
Never must be killed!

And what of those whose families
Have given all they have to give?
Please, please tell me,
Where does their reward flow?
Does it go to some
Who don't give a damn
Whether the best or least among us
Have the means to live?

This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
And though I search my brain
In distress and pain
I find nothing even close.

But I have to say I stand in awe of those
Whose blood has built this land.

Must their sacrifice be dishonored?
Must their hopes be dismissed?
I'd like to meet the man who says so
And feed him both my fists.

This is my heartbreak
My greatest heartbreak
It is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.

Can you feel this heartbreak?
This wrenching heartbreak?
It is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.

It is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.

It is the greatest heartbreak
Of them all.
