Subject: Sex and the Bible

I recently received an email concerning sex and I wanted to post the question and answer here. I was given permission by the person who asked it to do so. Here is the question and the answer....

Dear Rabbi, Is anal sex permitted between a Jewish husband and wife? Provided that anal sex is desired by the wife and that anal sex is not practiced to the exclusion of vaginal sex. Your thoughts please. Thanks.

Shalom,
If the wife is willing and there aren't any medical problems that could result, there is no problem.
Many Rabbis try to use the story of Onan as a platform to prove that masturbation, anal sex and oral sex are wrong. And some make the mistake of saying Onan was masturbating. If you read the story closely, he wasn't masturbating at all, he was having sex with a woman and at the last moment pulled out. That story has nothing to do with sex at all. It has everything in the world to do with disobedience. Onan was intentionally trying to break G-d's Holy Law.
Others try to use the story to say these other forms of sex are outlawed because it was preventing children from being born. In my opinion, the command to be fruitful and multiply was a temporary commandment needed to fill the earth. It isn't needed any longer. I currently live in India, it's quite clear to me that the Commandment has been fulfilled lol.
A husband and wife should enjoy each other. Life is hard and there are few joys in it, we should not try to cancel out the good things we DO have. As long as you don't break other commandments in the process, feel free.
Rabbi Stanley
