The self proclaimed experts on the G503 usually sandblast all the history, then re-invent history. Chemical strippers are very chancy, you could ruin the whole thing by walking away a moment too long. I found all my hood numbers wet sanding with worn out 180 and 320 paper, and like one fellow on that thread said, wiping with lacquer thinner now and then, it was a long slow process, but worth the effort. don't be surprised to see 2 or 3 sets of numbers on there, which will make and interesing puzzle huh? luckily, mine kept its army hood # into seabee use. And I believe a fire fighting unit after that. the G503 crew can be very misleading, the jeeps were painted after sub-assembly including the rubber parts, so they obviously weren't baked enamel, just good quality very old enamel. and the hood numbers were stenciled on some time after that, as it was assigned to a user- army, AAF, navy, marines, commonwealth, lend lease, etc etc. after I cleaned all the digits, I outlined them with an electric pencil, found a paint pencil that tone of blue, it wasn't sprayed the powder blue, but brushed over a stencil from the looks of it, with a much darker blue. As for the seabee unit, on the side of the cowl, I didn't expect one there, it showed up with a DA, good thing I don't believe in sandblasters or dipping huh? I clear coated over what I could salvage. With the forest green, fire engine red and orange layers around it...like a square time capsule. Be very careful with your 'archeology project' and good luck with it.
