Dear Darryl

The triangle hangs low on the body. The top of it (which is attached to the long ties (legs) should sit slightly above the top of the pubic hair. From here the ties first go backwards & upwards & cross over at the back of the waist. Then they come forward & downward to cross again right above the triangle. After this, each 'leg' is looped under & over the two combined pieces of cloth making up the legs (which have circled the hips twice). They hang down about 12 inches. There is no knot in back or in front, just the ties crossing over each other. Tucking the last foot of the 'leg' under the ties & then letting it flop over is enough friction to keep the whole outfit in place.

As you can imagine, this can be easily demonstrated in a minute but is quite difficult to describe in words.

In order to know how long to make the legs / ties, you should start by using a string to imitate the way the finished piece will be tied. That way you can see how long it needs to be, as the length is different for everyone depending on their size. But I would imagine the piece of fabric which will be the legs / ties would have to be at least 10 feet long, quite likely more.

It is made as one continuous strip, rather than two separate 'legs'. Some people have put padding in the ends & sewn claws, for more tigerlike effect. It's up to you.

In addition you need to make 2 'back legs'. These are separate from the long leg-ties. They are two pieces of tiger fabric, the same width & lining as the leg-ties, about 12 inches in length. At their top end they need to make the form of a loop so that they can be attached to the leg-ties in the back & still hang down about 12 inches.

It certainly is difficult to describe all this! I have not yet found a photograph but I may uncover one today. Another alternative would be to have your tiger skirt be your craft project at the apprentice retreat in November. We spend every afternoon on crafts & there would be people available who could help you with any problems you ran into.

Good luck!

Much love,
Ngakma Shardrol
