Well, Ned, I am retired now but I like getting out to all the local functions, the Senior Meal Site, the craft sales, yard sales, all the political forums and church events. Everyone is talking about the elections right now, we even had Bernie Sanders in town a while back! It seems that every week or so during the legislative session the six-pack would gather for a two hour meeting, mostly dominated by a very overbearing attorney, if you know what I mean. They put up a public front of unity, but in those private meetings the fur often flew. There is dissension and disagreement within the ranks. From what I am hearing around town and the county, there may only be two or three cans rolling back to Montpelier. Sue Davis and Reynold Choiniere (the salt of the earth) are running as independents against two of the six-packers: John Hall and Duncan Kilmartin. Up my way, Nancy Sheltra, Loren Shaw, Bolduc and Goodridge will have the fight of their lives to beat challengers Gil Power, Bob Walker (we are bringing him back!), Bob Kinsey and others. The six-pack may have created a semi-cohesive unit for themselves down in the statehouse, but they really haven't brought anything back home other than embarassing press about their anti-choice activities. We need jobs up here, that's what we need. We have lots of empty factories and we'd love to have them filled up with businesses looking to hire. We have the most well-prepared and driven workforce anywhere: they need to feed their kids and pay the mortgage. Arguing about same-sex marriage and raving against abortion didn't do anything to help the kids and families who are already here. I know elderly people who have to choose whether they want to eat this month or if they'd rather have their prescription drugs or if they should put fuel oil in the tank instead. It's hard times up here, but it really is the most beautiful place on earth. Support for the six-pack has dwindled sharply and there are exciting candidates wanting to take their place. I predict the six-pack will be a two-pack on November 6. But what do I know? I'm just an old woman........
