JPQ ~
I don't think that we can assume that those 69 Democrats will all vote for Tracy.

Both Reps Robert Rusten (D-Halifax) and Richard Howrigan (D-Fairfield) have expressed doubts about Tracy's leadership ability. I think that Freed will get at least one of their votes. Rep. Tom Pelham is the only Independent that I think will even think about voting with Freed.

It is going to be close, but it is clear, given the fact that two Democratic representatives have left the party in recent months for being too liberal, and given that the Progressives are gaining momentum in the state (partly because they feel that the Dems are too conservative) that the Republican caucus is much more tightly bound than the Democratic caucus.

I have some hope that moderate Republicans like Warren Miller of Elmore will vote for Tracy, but I have not seen any sign that such a thing will actually happen.

I think that the Republicans will ultimately win this one.
