UPDATE ---------To Whom It May Concern: (Early 1999)

CLAR - AN GHORTA MHOR ***** GREAT HUNGER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

1. They say “Things come in Three-es” . To be sure, to be sure, that’s been the case with our project.

(1) We are pleased to announce that the Inland Revenue has conferred Charitable Status on our group. One of its ‘big wheels’, Ken Symth, informed our secretary and founder personally by phone, and a follow-up letter, shortly before Christmas. (2) In early January more good news arrived when informed of a substantial award from the Lottery Charities Board for the purpose of purchasing office equipment, under its Small Grants Scheme. (3) As far back as November, with a little Brasso on his neck applied first, the drafter of this report visited the Criterion Ballroom/ A.O.H. Social & Recreation Club. Without much ado a vacant room, on an unused floor, was kindly donated at 23 Foyle Street. This floor, in the long-term, will become a Cultural & Learning Centre, when our projects have been completed. When re-decoration is carried out equipment will be purchased. If any of our members or patrons is aware of educational deductions on offer from local office suppliers, we would be most grateful for that information.

2. Activists working on commemorating the Great Hunger in North America write:

“Our field-tested and state approved (NJ) curriculum is now posted in its entirety (115-pages) on the Nebraska Department of Education web site: Irish Famine Intro.

The Illinois Department of Education has already linked to it: Social Studies.

Please do what you can to make people aware of it, especially teachers in Ireland.”

Media patrons take note! Needless to say more details on the above, & a 20-minute video can be obtained by contacting us.

3. We have contacted Channel 9 (TV), which covered the December 3rd Dockside commemoration to the 72 men, women and children who were recklessly suffocated aboard the coffin-ship “Londonderry” – within 36 hours of leaving Sligo on December 1st, 1848. If such is provided then we will arrange a special showing at our new offices, which are centrally located. This can be sent also to Sligo, Tyrone & Donegal on request from our sub-committees in these counties.

4. Once the office is up and running and we have a desk photocopier, it is our intention to produce a small newsletter for distribution to members, patrons and supporters. Can anyone suggest an appropriate banner-header? To date, progress has been slow, but certainly sure, in spite of no paid full-time staff.

5. 4 bishops and leading clerics from all the churches, Seamus Deane, Brian Friel and Seamus Heaney are just some of our illustrious Patrons. We want to remind you all that its not just ‘big names’ we want to see on our patrons’ list, but people from all walks of life and professions, especially teachers and those engaged in entertainment or the media as well. Why not talk to your colleagues, the more the better, as a major programme of events is being planned, and schools in particular will surely benefit, if everything goes as it should.

Thanking you all for your past assistance and support and your kind attention to this unsolicited communication.

Issued by the N-W Memorials Committee.
