1848 * 150th Anniversary * 1998

This list were read out during a moving commemoration on Derry Docks on an unexpected bright and dry December 3rd. 1998. The usually harsh winter wind from the river was strangely mild that early sunny afternoon. Sectarian tensions seemed far remote as four of the main Christian churches co-operated in holding a joint service. Several hundred people attended, as did elected representatives from Derry, Sligo, Strabane and Donegal, all playing a pro-active role. Poems, spoken in the native tongue of those who perished, were composed and recited by younger pupils from local Gaelic language schoools and colleges. Teachers made a very postive contribution without any fuss. The poet, Séamus Heaney sent an appropriate poem that was delivered in English by a senior pupil of Thornhill girls' college. A Carnation was lowered into the river Foyle by a queque of seventy-two schoolchildren, as the above list was read out by a relay of cross-community activists. A metal plaque dedicated to the victims of the Londonderry was unveiled near the 'coffin-ship berth', where in recent years luxury-liners from America tie up, during short visits over the summer months. This is also the agreed site for the proposed North West An Ghorta Mhor Memorial.
