PART #8
Boudreau had a date with Lucia the following night, and was hoping her father would not be around when he called at her home. There was something sinister about that man. Boudreau did not care for the way he threw his wealth and power around. Boudreau had grown up with money in the family; and his parents had never made anything of it. They never saw the importance of letting people know they were people of money or influence. He really felt sorry for Lucia living in the house with that set of parents. Her mother always seemed uncomfortable around her husband. Boudreau wondered if the poor woman ever had an opportunity to talk. Every time he had been in their home, she sat like a little mouse afraid to open her mouth.
It was obvious to Boudreau that Hollingsworth doted upon his daughter, and ignored his wife. Lenore was a pretty woman, not the beauty that Lucia was, but she was attractive for the age she happened to be. Boudreau could see that she had been suppressed by her husband to the point, she was just part of the decorum, nothing more, nothing less. Boudreau had tried to engage her in conversation; but Hollingsworth always stepped in, and took over the conversation. Boudreau wondered if Hollingsworth was afraid to let her talk.
When Boudreau reached the Deverall home, he rang the doorbell; and the butler came to open the door. Once again Boudreau was taken to the parlor. Boudreau was getting used to being shown into the parlor. He always had to wait on Lucia for she never seemed to be able to be ready on time. He chuckled to himself; and thought, “Next time I will bring some reading material.” It seemed a little strange that no one ever came to greet him. If guests came to their home, his mother or father; and many times both of them came to extend a welcome to their home.
Lucia finally appeared; and was wearing an off white voile dress with tiny rose buds in the material. He saw she was wearing a pair of pink heels that clicked when she walked across the floor. How beautiful she looked. Boudreau did not believe she ever had one hair out of place. It was always perfectly groomed. Of course Boudreau did not realize that Hollingsworth had a beautician in residence to keep his wife and daughter’s hair in perfect shape. Appearance was very important to Hollingsworth.
Boudreau and Lucia were planning to attend a dance at the Country Club. Lucia asked Boudreau if he would prefer going in the limo that would be driven by her daddy’s chauffeur. He said, “No, I prefer taking my own car if that is all right with you.” She said, “Oh, all right, if we must. I sort of prefer being driven in the limo.” Boudreau said, “Lucia, you are a spoiled lady.” She pretended to pout; and said, “I know that my daddy does spoil me rotten.” Boudreau said, “Well, let’s do something different, and break away from Daddy tonight.”
After Boudreau and Lucia arrived at the Country Club, they danced a number of dances. When they stopped to rest for a few minutes, Lucia said to Boudreau, “I must have left my purse in the car; I think I will run out and get it for I want to touch up my makeup. Boudreau said, “Why don’t you stay here, and I will go get it for you.” She thanked him, and he left to go to the car. Boudreau walked outside the Country Club towards the parking lot. When he was within a few feet of his car, he saw there was a man at the door of the driver’s side; and he was trying to break into his car. He yelled, “What are you doing?” The man turned around, grimaced at Boudreau, and came at him with a knife he quickly pulled from his clothes. Boudreau managed to jump aside as the man lunged at him. The man whirled around, and came at Boudreau once again. This time the knife found its’ mark, and Boudreau fell to the ground. The man took off running.
Lucia waited inside for awhile wondering why it was taking Boudreau so long to return. After ten minutes had passed, she knew something had to be wrong. She decided she would go out to check on Boudreau; and when she reached the car, she found him crumpled up on the ground in a pool of blood. Lucia began screaming for someone to come help her. She reached down to Boudreau, and felt a faint pulse. Once again Lucia screamed for help. Soon there were parking attendants running towards her. She yelled for them to try to find a doctor inside.
One of the parking attendants ran back inside, and asked if there were a doctor there. A man stepped out from the crowd of people; and said, “I am a doctor, what is the problem?” The attendant said, “Come with me, a man has been hurt in the parking lot.” The doctor said, “I will get my bag from my car.” Soon the doctor was bent over Boudreau; and saying, “This man has lost quite a bit of blood; we must get him to the hospital as soon as possible.”
Lucia said, “What happened to him? He was fine inside, than he came out to get my purse from the car.” The doctor said, “This young man has been stabbed.”
