PART #59
Bow went to the study, and sat down at Joshua’s desk. He heard a tap on the door; and Manobo stuck his head inside, and asked, “Do you need anything Mr. Bow?” Bow answered, “Is there any coffee made up in the kitchen? I could use a cup of your coffee, Manobo?” Manobo laughed, “Ah, you want some of my coffee with the chicory, don’t you?” “That’s right Manobo, is there any other way to drink coffee?” “Many folks think so, Mr. Bow; of course they haven’t been raised in the bayou country.”
Manobo left to prepare some coffee for Bow; and while he was gone, Bow thought of the events of the day. He was glad Jean Pierre had come back to the plantation, and talked to him about Marguerite and the baby. What a way to have to die! He had paid a high price to live the life of a pirate. There had to be some good in the man for he wanted his wife and child away from all that piracy brought to a family.
Bow felt himself quite fortunate to have gotten out of that life before a tragedy had befallen him.
His thoughts went to Catherine as they always seemed to do now. He couldn’t remember ever meeting a woman with her spunk and determination. He was grateful that she and Marguerite had been there today. With their efforts, the whole situation had turned around. It certainly seemed that the two women got along well together. He hoped that would continue in the days ahead.
Manobo brought the coffee for Bow, and set the tray on the desk. “Why don’t you sit with me for awhile, Manobo?”asked Bow. Manobo smiled, shook his head, and said, “Mr. Bow, if it is all right with you, I think I will call it a night. This has been a little too much excitement for me.” Bow said, “Sure, you go to bed; I need to get myself calmed down a bit before I think of sleeping.” Manobo laughed, “That’s not going to happen with my coffee, Mr. Bow.”
Bow sipped his coffee, and thought some more about Catherine. He wanted to marry as soon as possible. He hoped that would be all right with her. He did not want her going through this pregnancy by herself. People were bound to talk, and he would prefer they be talked about as a couple, rather then Catherine having to put up with that alone. He knew that stubborn streak of Catherine’s, and he wasn’t sure how she would feel about marrying this soon after Joshua had died. Well, it was something they would have to discuss, and come to a decision together.
There was a noise that startled Bow; it sounded like someone was walking around outside the study. He got up from the desk and peered out to see Catherine walking toward the kitchen. He said, “Catherine, is everything all right?” She responded by saying, “I couldn’t sleep, and thought I would get myself some milk and crackers.” “Do you feel all right?” he asked. “Bow, you have to stop fussing over me; I am fine,” she said.
Bow apologized and said, “I know it has been quite a traumatic day; I am having difficulty getting myself calmed down. Why don’t you get your milk and crackers and come in, and chat with me.” Catherine agreed to do that; and soon appeared with a plate of crackers and cheese and a large glass of milk.” She sat down in a chair on the opposite side of the desk and was munching on the crackers and cheese when Bow said, “Catherine, I have been thinking about our wedding. What do you think about getting married soon?” Catherine looked somewhat surprised and asked, “Bow, are you sure you want to marry me now? We could wait until after the baby is born.”
Bow was afraid she would feel that way about the wedding. He said, “Catherine, I would rather we went ahead; and married now so that the child would be born with my name. I think it would be better all the way around if people felt this was my child, rather then Joshua’s child. I don’t know how you feel about this. I don’t mean to take anything away from Joshua, but he is gone; and this child deserves a full time father who is here, and loves his mother.”
Catherine asked, “Bow, what will people think if we marry right away?” Bow responded, “Catherine, how many people know about your marriage to Joshua?” “Probably no one knows except for Peter Dunkirk.” Bow said, “He is a lawyer, and he is not going to say anything if we tell him not to. We can just let people think the plantation was left to me since I was Joshua’s cousin. They don’t need to know anymore then we fell in love, the plantation was left to me, and this will be our home.”
Catherine said, “Bow, you know the child will be born early; can you imagine the talk that will go around?” Bow said, “Who cares about the talk? We know the truth, and that is all that matters; we will meet this together. There are people who will talk anyway. You can’t stop people from talking; but you can go ahead; and live your life the way you see fit, and disregard the talk.”
To be continued...
