PART #65
George was not a tall man, but he was a handsome man. He had dark hair that lay in natural waves across his head. His eyes were dark brown, and he had an olive complexion. Marguerite noticed his finger nails were well trimmed, and his hands were smooth. It was obvious he had not done much in the way of hard physical labor with those hands. He was well built, and wore his clothes well. She could see he was very particular about his appearance. There was something quite masculine about him; perhaps it was the way he carried himself. He had an air of self confidence, and certainly was not afraid of saying what he thought. He reminded her of Catherine in that sense.
She smiled to herself when she thought of the shocked expression he wore when the group of men encircled him and Bow at the saw mill. This was all quite new to him, and she doubted if anything like that had ever happened to him in England. She wondered if this man would be able to handle life in the Americas. Would he even want to stay in the Americas? If he decided to stay, there would certainly have to be some adjustments made in his lifestyle.
George saw a faint smile on Marguerite’s face; and she quickly looked down as if she were afraid he would see the smile. He wondered if she were thinking about him; and if so, what was she thinking? Bow saw George watching Marguerite; and he decided he would engage her in some conversation himself. He asked, “Marguerite, do you think it would be all right for me to contact your father and brothers about the possibility of working at the saw mill?” Marguerite said, “Bow, there would certainly be nothing wrong for you to ask.” Bow said, “If we could get your father to manage the saw mill for awhile to get it started again, perhaps later we could find a full time manager. That would help your father to know he would not have to be locked into a position for a long time. Marguerite said, “Bow, my father is old enough he may not want the responsibility at all. You know the men who work at a saw mill are sometimes difficult. We saw a sample of that this afternoon.” Bow said, “I know it takes a man with a strong hand to keep things under control.”
Bow thought a while longer, then said, “I do believe I will ask your father, and we will take it from there. If he refuses, then we will continue to look for a manager. We do need to get the saw mill up and running soon. Bow turned to George; and asked, “George, you have seen some excitement this afternoon. Do you think you could learn to like it here in the Americas?” George said, “Some of what I have seen I like, and some I don’t like so well. But, that is true wherever one lives. I guess I really haven’t been here long enough to know whether it would be a place I would want to live.”
When they arrived back at the plantation, Catherine came out to meet them. She was carrying Jean Baptiste. The baby squealed when he saw his mother. She reached out her arms to take him, and planted a kiss upon his chubby little cheek. She asked, “Catherine, are you feeling better?” Catherine said, “Yes, I am doing much better now.”
Catherine said, “George, what did you think about the saw mill?” George said, “I liked it fine until a group of men came, and demanded money from Bow. They had guns Catherine, and they were pointed right at us. Marguerite saved the day by shooting at them. They were scared away.” Catherine patted George’s arm and said, “George, I don’t see any blood anywhere, so you were very fortunate. It was good that Marguerite went along to save the day.”
George looked at Marguerite and said, “This woman is full of surprises.” “Catherine, you probably should know that these men promised to return for their money,” remarked George. Catherine asked, “Bow, do you think they will be making some problems out there?” Bow responded, “It is always possible Catherine. We will have to be prepared for that sort of thing.”
Bow hadn’t said anything to Catherine, but he did not feel George would be a good selection as manager of the saw mill. He couldn’t imagine hardened timber workers wanting to work for a man they didn’t know; and who would appear quite different to them. He would talk with her about it later when they were alone. Besides he didn’t like the way that George kept ogling Marguerite. Where was his sense of decency anyway? The woman had just lost her husband a few days prior.
To be continued...
