PART #67
Bow told Reuben about the equipment that needed improvements. He said he was hoping the improvements could be made; and work might begin at the saw mill within a week. Reuben told him he would come out, and look everything over the next day. He would know at that time whether his sons would be coming to work, and he would let Bow know.
“To be fair with you, I must tell you of some things that have happened at the saw mill,” said Bow. He told him how someone broke into the office, also of the men who came out the day before with guns demanding money that Joshua Sallier owed them. Bow said, “They said they would be back, and I have no doubt that will turn out to be true. I am not sure what they will do, but I believe we can count on them to show up in some fashion.” Bow asked Reuben if he had any suggestions on how to handle the situation. Reuben answered, “As I see it, you could pay them what is owed, or you can be prepared for them when they come. If my sons decide to go to work for you, you can be assured you will have men who are good with a gun.” Bow laughed, “Marguerite told us about them. But, I’ve got to tell you, she’s quite good with a gun herself.” Mrs. Robichaud said, “Everyone in this house knows how to handle a gun.” Reuben looked over at her; and said, “Ma, here, is the best of all of us.”
Bow felt good about the potential of Marguerite’s family working at the saw mill. He decided while he was in Lake Charles, he would stop in, and visit with Peter Dunkirk. When he walked into the lawyer’s office, he found that Peter actually had some time in which to visit with him. Peter stood, extended his hand to Bow, and then invited him to sit down for awhile.
Bow said, “Peter, I haven’t heard anything from you or the sheriff about the stolen goods that Joshua had stored in the building in the swamp. What became of all those stolen items? Peter said, “I have been meaning to come visit you for something strange happened out there.” Bow asked, “What has happened?” Peter said, “When the sheriff and deputies brought the Doucettes back to town, the sheriff said they would go out the next day; and begin hauling all the stolen goods out of there, and then try to find the rightful owners. When they got out there the following day, everything was gone. That place was nothing but an empty building.”
Bow said, “I find that difficult to believe. Who would have known those things were out there?” Peter said, “Maybe Joshua had more people involved then the Doucettes and Jean Pierre Boudreau.” Bow said, “I suppose that is a possibility, but I certainly was not aware of any other people involved. There weren’t that many people who knew about the stolen goods.”
While Bow was there visiting with Peter, he decided to ask about the money Catherine had brought back from Jennings. He asked if the money had been dispersed to the people who had their Monet stolen. Peter said, “The sheriff was taking care of that matter, Bow, so I really don’t know what to say about that.”
Bow watched Peter Dunkirk twisting his mustache as he talked. That was the annoying habit that had bothered Catherine. He seemed to be a little nervous too. It made Bow wonder about him. He had always trusted Peter Dunkirk, but there were some things that were just not adding up. He thought while he was in town he would stop in at the sheriff’s office, and have a chat.
Bow stood, extended his hand to Peter, and thanked him for his time. He didn’t say anything about going over to the sheriff’s office. Something wasn’t setting right on his mind just then. He walked out of the office towards the sheriff’s office, and saw the sheriff was just coming out the door. Bow yelled, “Sheriff Le Havre, have you got a few minutes?” The sheriff raised his hand in greeting, and motioned for Bow to step into his office.
Bow said, “I wanted to stop by, and ask you about the stolen goods in the building out in the swamp.” The sheriff said, “Bow, I don’t know what happened, but someone had emptied that building overnight. The night we brought the Doucettes to town was the night someone moved in, and cleaned that place.” “Do you have any thoughts as to who did that?” Bow asked. The sheriff looked at Bow; and said, “Bow, I must admit this bothers me a great deal for there weren’t many people who knew about those stolen goods.” Bow asked, “Do you know all the people who did know about the items?” “Well, I knew, my deputies knew, you knew, and Peter Dunkirk knew about the building and the stolen goods. I suppose there is always a possibility that Joshua had other people involved in his criminal activities. I’m checking every lead that I can find.”
Bow asked, “There is one more thing I would like to ask. How about the money that Joshua was given for the stolen Monet? Was that returned to its’ rightful owners?” The sheriff looked rather surprised when he answered, “Bow, it was my understanding you were to return that money to its’ rightful owners.” Bow asked, “How did you hear that?” Sheriff Le Havre thought for a moment, then said, “I believe Peter Dunkirk told me you would be returning the money.”
Bow had a shocked expression on his face and he said, “Sheriff, there’s something very strange going on here. Peter Dunkirk told us he would see that you got the money to return to the people who had their Monet stolen. He took the money from us the last time we had a meeting with him in his office.” Bow was getting a very uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach about Peter Dunkirk.
