PART #69
Bow walked out of Sheriff Le Havre’s office feeling something was not right; and he was afraid the problem had a lot to do with Peter Dunkirk. He walked swiftly back to Peter’s office, but found the door was locked when he tried to enter. Perhaps Peter had an outside appointment, though he had said nothing about having to leave the office for an appointment, and certainly did not seem to be in a hurry while Bow was there. Something did not set right with Bow. He felt like he was going in circles when he turned around, and returned to Sheriff LeHavre’s office. He walked in the door, and he said, “I’ve got a bad feeling about Peter Dunkirk. I just returned from his office. When I tried to enter, I found the door was locked. I do find this interesting he would be gone in the middle of the day. Is there anyway you can get me in there?”
The sheriff said, “I guess I can get you in there. I have been wondering about Peter since he told us conflicting stories about the money for that painting. He never even talked to me about that money he received from you.” Bow asked, “Why would he make such a deal out of telling me you would see that the money got to its’ rightful owners unless he thought we would not be talking? I have a feeling the money ended up in Peter Dunkirk’s pockets.”
The sheriff and Bow walked back to Peter’s office, and the sheriff opened the door. When the two men walked inside the office, there was no one to be found. When Bow opened Peter’s file cabinets, he realized there were no files for Joshua Le Bleu. Bow said, “I know we’re in trouble now. There are no files here for Joshua. He has been a client of Peter’s for several years. Why wouldn’t there be files for Joshua? I find that very interesting.”
Sheriff Le Havre asked, “What do you think has happened here?” Bow said, “If I were to guess, I would say our friend Peter Dunkirk has left Lake Charles.” “There’s one way to find that out Bow,” said Sheriff Le Havre. “What is that?” asked Bow. “Let’s go to the bank, and do some checking. If Peter has cleaned out all his accounts, I think that will pretty much tell us what is going on with Peter Dunkirk.”
Bow and Sheriff Le Havre walked to the bank, and asked to see the bank manager. When he came to the window, Sheriff Le Havre said, “David, we need to talk to you in private.” David invited them back into the room that was his office. “What can I do for you gentlemen?” he asked, as he closed the door. “Sheriff Le Havre said, “We are doing some checking on Peter Dunkirk. Could you tell us if he has emptied his accounts in the last few days?”
David smiled at Sheriff Le Havre and said, “Somehow I had a feeling this wasn’t over.” “What do you mean by that statement, David?” asked Sheriff Le Havre. David said, “Peter has been removing money from various accounts for about a week.” The last of it was removed yesterday afternoon. He told me he was moving away for he had a better opportunity out west.” Bow asked, “Did Peter happen to say where he was moving?” “No, he didn’t say anything other then he was going west,” said David.
Bow was disappointed with the information, but figured Peter had taken a while to come up with what he considered answers for the questions people would be asking. He looked at the bank manager, then asked, “Do you mind if I ask how Peter took the funds?” David looked toward the sheriff; and said, “Since he is gone, I don’t think it should pose a problem for me to give an answer to that question.” The sheriff shook his head indicating it was all right to share the information. David said, “He took the money in bank drafts.” “Won’t there be a way to trace those?” asked Bow. “They can be traced following deposit at another bank,” said David.
The bank manager told them it might take awhile for Peter to deposit the bank drafts. He also told them he was extremely wealthy. He said, “I never knew that lawyers made that much money. I was teasing him about it one day, and he laughingly said, “I inherited the money.” Bow had a scowl on his face as he shook his head, “Peter told me he had no living relatives. He said that was one of the reasons he and Joshua got along so well, for the same was true for Joshua, except for me, his cousin.”
The sheriff said, “It is pretty obvious to me that Peter was involved in some shady deals. I am going to contact some other sheriffs, and have them and their men keep a watch for our friend, Peter Dunkirk.” Bow responded by saying, “I just wish we had the records from his office.” The sheriff said, “Let’s go to his house; it might be possible he kept some records there.”
Bow and Sheriff Le Havre drove out to Peter’s home. When they got inside the house they realized he had been planning a move. Everything was covered with sheets. Bow began to uncover everything, and found a desk that Peter had used in the living room. He began opening drawers. There was nothing that would give any information. Sheriff Le Havre walked throughout the house; and came to the kitchen which happened to have a large fireplace. Bow could hear him whistle and say, “Hello, what have we here?”
