PART #72

“Bow, do you feel better now that you have found the man to manage the saw mill?” asked Catherine. Bow answered, “I do if the decision on this man is all right with you. I really felt someone who had experience with this work, and who knew the men would do a better job. If George were to assume that position, he would have many hurdles in his path. I felt the men would not accept George, and it’s important for a manager to present himself as an authority figure who knows what he is doing. Marguerite’s father has all those qualities.” Catherine said, “Bow, I do understand all that. To tell you the truth I don’t think George was all that interested in managing a saw mill.”

Bow came over to Catherine, lifted her up, and caressed her long curly hair. She turned her face to his, and he gently kissed her. He said, “I am happy to hear that; for I did not want to offend you in this decision.” She smiled at him; and said, “George talked to me today about the direction of his life and career. He loves the silver business; and he wants to stay in the Americas to start up a business here. He has many years experience for he has worked with his father and my father since he was a boy. That is more along the line of George’s expertise.” Bow said, “Whew, I am so relieved to hear that. He will be doing what he loves, and you will be happy he is staying here at Lake Charles.” Catherine said, “Do you want to hear something else?” “Sure, wife of mine, what is that?” “I think Marguerite is really pleased he has decided to stay. When she heard the news, she was smiling from ear to ear. She hasn’t stopped smiling since he shared that information with us. He asked her if she could go to Lake Charles with him tomorrow to look for a building. Of course she was more then happy to say she would go.”

Catherine walked over to the bed, and removed her robe, laying it across a chair. Bow, who had gotten into bed, lay there watching her as she picked up a brush from the bedside table; and began brushing her long hair. He caught a faint smell of her fragrance, and saw that her body was glistening with beads of perspiration from the heat of the night. He did not believe she realized how beautiful she was to him. She slid into bed, and reached out to him drawing him close.

The next morning Bow awakened at an early hour, and told Catherine he was going down to the kitchen to get a cup of Manobo’s coffee. She asked him if he would bring up some crackers and milk for her. He asked, “Are you feeling sick again?” “A little,” she answered. He said, “I will be right back with your crackers.” He hurried out the door, down the hall, and the stairs, and called out, “Manobo, I’m coming for some of your coffee.” He could hear Manobo chuckling as he neared the kitchen. “Mr. Bow, you sure do like my coffee.” “You bet I do,” laughed Bow. “Could you also get me some crackers and milk for Miss Catherine?” Manobo smiled knowingly, and asked, “Is Miss Catherine feeling poorly again this morning?” Bow looked at Manobo and said, “You don’t miss much around here, do you?” “No Sir, I reckon I don’t,” he chuckled. “Well, keep it under your hat, will you?” asked Bow. “You can count on me, Mr. Bow, don’t you worry yourself now,” he replied.

Bow carried a tray with his coffee and Catherine’s milk and crackers back up the stairs. When he reached their bedroom, Catherine was vomiting into the bowl that had been on the bedside table. Bow, reaching for a cloth, dipped it in the pitcher of water on the table, and placed it on the back of Catherine’s neck. She said, “You are so good to me. I know this has to be pretty disgusting to stand here, and watch your wife vomiting.” Bow said, “It seems to me the vows we took when we married said something like, “For better or worse, in sickness and in health.” Catherine started to cry; and said, “Bow, I would give anything for this baby to be your baby.” He took her in his arms, and said, “Catherine, this baby is my baby as far as I am concerned.” She cried all the more; and he held her until her tears were spent.

When Catherine stopped crying, Bow handed the plate of crackers to her. She took the crackers, and began to nibble on the edge of one of the crackers. He said, “Catherine, Reuben is coming out today to look over the equipment at the saw mill. I feel like I should go back to Lake Charles and see what Sheriff Le Havre has learned. When Reuben comes, would you tell him to give you the information about the employees, and I will let him know as soon as the work on the equipment has been completed?” “Yes, I will speak to Reuben, and get the information you need,” she said. Bow looked down at her, and asked, “Are you feeling better now?” Catherine stood up; and said, “Yes, I do feel better. I will dress, and spend some time with Marguerite and George before they leave to go into Lake Charles. I have a feeling I will be watching Jean Baptiste while they are gone.”

Bow smiled at Catherine and said, “Spending time with Jean Baptiste will help prepare you for our baby. Think of all that good experience you will have by the time our child is born.” She laughed as he walked out the door of the bedroom. Catherine dressed, and carried the tray back down to the kitchen. When she walked into the kitchen Manobo was drinking a cup of his infamous coffee. The smell was a little overpowering for Catherine. She said, “Manobo, would it be asking too much to have Cook prepare me some cooked cereal, and bring it out on the front porch. I need some fresh air this morning to help clear my head.”

To be continued...
