PART #44

Catherine left the office of Peter Dunkirk; and got into the carriage, and rode down to the docks. Bow was on deck when he saw the carriage pull up alongside the ship. He waved at her, smiled, and yelled, “Come on board Catherine.” He was pleased to see that she had come to Lake Charles. He wondered if she had come for the purpose of seeing him, or if she had other business. As she walked toward him, the breeze blew her hair away from her face. His heart quickened at the sight of her. Even in the long dress she was wearing it was impossible to conceal the beautiful shape of this curvaceous woman. When she got closer so he could clearly see her face, he saw what he felt was worry or concern.

She walked up to him; and he asked,“Catherine, is something wrong?” She said, “Is there ever anything right?” Bow immediately became concerned, “What has happened?” he asked. “Are you all right?” She said, “Bow, I have some bad news to tell you. I talked with Manobo today, and he told me about some of Joshua’s business associates. These three people are Salvadore and Michelle Doucette and Jean Pierre Boudreau.”

Bow said, “Oh no, Catherine, not those people.” Catherine looked at him; and asked, “So you know these people?” Bow said, “I don’t know them personally, but I certainly know their reputation. They are cut throat pirates of the worst kind. Are you saying Joshua was conducting business with these three?” Catherine said, “Yes, that is what I am saying.”

Bow said, “Now, I understand why all those stolen goods were in that building.” Catherine told Bow she had visited with Peter Dunkirk; and he had gone to the sheriff’s office to tell him about this last bit of information. She also told him what Peter had said about her staying out at the plantation by herself. He looked at her and said, “Catherine, he is right. You would not be safe out there by yourself.”

He could see the stubborn set of her jaw as she said, “Bow, there are servants out there.” He shook his head; and said, “Catherine, you don’t seem to understand. These people are the worst sort of criminals. Your servants would be no match for them. They would just as soon kill someone as not. They would have no qualms in killing all the servants and you, then taking over the plantation. You must not go back there.”

Catherine wailed, “What do you suggest I do? I have to have a place to stay.” Bow said, “Catherine, I will take you out to the plantation; you will get your clothes, and I will bring you back here to Lake Charles. You can stay in the hotel, or you can stay here on the ship.” Catherine asked, “Where will you be staying?” He said, “I am going to move into the plantation.” “I thought you told me you had to go to sea,” she said. Bow took hold of her arms and said, “Catherine, there is no freight more important to me then your life. I am not going to take chances on you losing your life. You are too important to me, don’t you understand that?” “But, I can’t ask you not to go to sea because of me,” she cried.

Tears were sliding down her cheeks, and Bow pulled her into his arms. “Catherine, don’t you know you mean everything to me? I will send the ship out, and have one of my men serve as the Captain. They will get the job done. I can’t go away, and leave you at a time like this.”

Catherine tried to talk Bow out of staying for she feared for his shipping business. He had six new men on board, but he wouldn’t back down. She thought he could be really stubborn when he put his mind to it. But she was grateful he was going to stay, and get things going at the plantation. It was a tremendous relief to her. Bow moved out to the plantation; and Catherine came into town to stay at the hotel. Bow insisted that she have a guard outside her door all the time she was staying there.

To be continued...
