PART #25
The next morning Catherine awakened to the sound of knocking on her door. She opened her eyes, looked around, and realized someone was trying to get her attention. She answered, “Yes, what is it?” The bellboy answered, “I have your breakfast tray.” She said, “Just a moment please.” Catherine grabbed a dressing gown, tied it around herself, and walked to the door. She opened the door, took the tray, and thanked the bellboy for bringing the food to her.
Catherine carried the tray into the room, and placed it on the table. Grabbing a hair brush from the bedside table, she brushed her hair, then sat down to eat. She could see it was daylight outside, and decided she probably should not be wasting any time. She would have to hurry with her breakfast, and get dressed for the day.
While she was eating, another knock could be heard on her door. Again she said, “Yes, what is it?” The answer came, “Catherine, it’s me, Joshua. Is it all right if I come in for a few minutes?” Catherine said, “Joshua, I am not dressed yet; would it be all right with you to come back in twenty minutes?” He said, “I really need to talk with you before we leave. I will only stay five minutes.”
Catherine finally agreed that he could come into the room. She told him, “The door is unlocked.” Joshua walked into the room with a bouquet of flowers in his arms. He brought them over to the table, and handed them to Catherine. She smiled and thanked him for his thoughtfulness; and said, “Did you say you had something you wanted to say to me?” Joshua said, “Yes, I do have something I need to say. I have been awake a good part of the night asking myself, ‘Whatever did I do to offend Catherine?” I still don’t know what I did, but I do want to apologize to you, and seek your forgiveness. I would be so unhappy if I hurt you in any way. I have asked you to be my wife, and I could not bear it if I hurt you.”
Catherine could hear the extreme sadness in his voice, and he sounded so sincere. She noticed he was twisting his mustache as he talked, and that he kept his eyes downcast like he couldn’t bear to look at her. She was drawn to him by his sincerity; and said, “Joshua, I was just being a silly fool. It is I who must ask you to forgive me. You have been nothing but kind to me.”
She saw an immediate change in his countenance. He looked down at her with a big smile on his face; and then he lifted her from the chair, and took her in his arms. He said in a husky voice, “You have made me so happy. I hope you know how much I do love you. Hurting you would almost kill me.”
Catherine was touched by his sweetness. She looked up into his face that had a trace of tears on his cheeks; and he gently bent over, and kissed her. She allowed him to draw her closer. As he kissed her, he whispered, “Catherine, please marry me.” Something was happening to her resolve to wait. He did love her; surely she had been wrong about him being involved in anything shady with Bowregard. Joshua was such a gentleman, and she could visualize them having a good marriage. Joshua said, “I know I promised you I would not push you into this marriage, but I do want you as my wife so badly, I can’t seem to help myself.” His eyes were pleading with her. I promise you I will be a good husband to you. You will want for nothing. In fact you may have anything your heart desires.”
Joshua took her into his arms once again, and kissed her hungrily. Catherine’s thinking was becoming clouded. She was caught up in the kisses; and she finally said, “All right Joshua, I will marry you.” He danced around the room and said, “I can’t believe it. I am going to be married.” He came back to her; and said, “Catherine, let’s get married in Jennings. Please, my darling, I don’t want to wait any longer to marry you.” “If you want a large wedding, we can do that when we get back to the plantation, but let’s get married so this trip can be our honeymoon.”
Catherine agreed to marry Joshua in Jennings.
