PART #35

Bow felt Joshua had lived a wasted life. He remembered Joshua’s father, and how he grieved when he saw the direction Joshua’s life was going. Bow had talked with him, and watched him weep bitter tears over Joshua’s life. He had said to Bow, “I don’t know why he can’t be like you Bow. Why must he be drawn to this type of life?” Bow had felt pity for the older man, and said, “Sir, I don’t know why Joshua feels he must live this way.” Bow felt Joshua’s father died of a broken heart. The servants had found him seated in his favorite chair before the fireplace. He had seemed to be in reasonably good health, and there was no reason the doctor could find for him dying.

Bow watched Joshua go from bad to worse following his father’s death. It appeared that his father’s death had been somewhat a relief to Joshua, for now he could live the way he wanted without the constant criticism he felt his father gave him. Oh, the things Bow could have told Catherine about this man, but he held back because of his own shortcomings. He wondered if he would ever be able to forgive himself for not warning Catherine about Joshua.

He had to wonder, “What would have happened if Joshua had not been shot to death? How long would it have been before his lifestyle would have left his wife with a broken heart?” He was sorry to hear that Joshua was shot, but for Catherine’s sake, he was thankful he was gone.

Bow reached Lake Charles, and took the carriage to the stables. After he had stabled the horses, he walked down to the dock; and boarded the ship. He saw that the freight had come in, and soon it would be time to put out to sea. He knew he must hold off going to sea until he had made an appointment for Catherine with Joshua’s lawyer. He would take care of that first thing in the morning before returning to the plantation with her money.

Bow was glad Catherine seemed to accept the fact that Joshua had stolen the money from her portmanteau. He was afraid she would think he was lying about the whole incident. Perhaps it was good that she had caught Joshua in a lie so that she believed Bow when he told her the truth about the money. That was one hurdle Bow was glad to have crossed over.

He knew he should be thinking about the suggestion Catherine had given about him taking over and running the plantation. Would that be wise when he loved Catherine as he did? He knew she was probably not going to be interested in marriage for sometime. He didn’t even know if she cared about him. If she had cared, why would she have married Joshua? He really didn’t know if he could handle seeing her all the time, loving her as he did, and not being able to express his love for her. The only chance he would have for a relationship with Catherine would be if he could be patient, and give her time to heal from all that had taken place.

The more he thought about it, the more he believed it would be best for him to go to sea. He would try to get things set up for her at the plantation before he left. But going to sea would give her the time she needed to heal from this horrible marriage to Joshua. Yes, he believed that would be best for both of them at this point.

To be continued...
