In response to this message on the height restriction barrier at Lingfield Railway Station the following should be taken in to consideration.
As the occupier of Station House I can assure you that the gypsies have been in to the Station car park many more times than the 4 in 9 years mentioned. On every occasion we and the residents of Edenbrook and the houses along Station Road that back on to the car park, have had to contend with the destruction, theft and human waste caused by their unwanted pit stops.
Regards the emergency access, as the Officer in Charge at Lingfield Fire Station I can inform you that we do carry a key to the barrier on the fire appliance, during the day a key is accessable from the ticket office and at night we have a key in our home. This emergency access is no more a problem than that of Gun Pit Road car park where we are not provided with access keys by the Council.
Regards the use of the station forecourt for turning buses, even before the barrier was erected the buses were blocking the end of the Station approach with bus drivers regularly verbally confronting car drivers who were stopped at the station to collect travellers.
The station is not a recognised Metro bus driver change area and as such is not supposed to be used as such and the barrier has helped to prevent this happening. When the bus replacement service is running it is very rare that the barrier is not open for them to allow full access because if the ticket office has not opened it, then myself or my wife do so (not our job but it gets done to make things easier).
Yes it can be inconvenient, but overall this barrier has had a positive effect on preventing gypsies, the problem of local buses blocking the station approach as well as the problems that were caused prior to the barrier of having long vehicles (cars with caravans, motor homes, lorries and even coaches) left in the car park taking up 2-4 usable car park spaces preventing legitimate travellers from parking.
These barriers are a pain but overall they certainly have there benefits.
