Sounds like they are attempting to stitch you up for the repairs. If the oil level was too low, wouldn't the warning light come on?

Seeing as you've been topping up the oil, I don't see how you can not top it up enough (your word against theirs I guess). Would a car do 34K if you weren't topping it up properly - I don't think so.

As you mentioned, if there were problems they would (or should) have been spotted during the numerous visits to the dealer.

Perhaps you could seek advice from the CAB, to see where you stand legally?
