 We had the same problems with my wife's '53' reg 1.6 16v petrol (Z16XE) Meriva last October. Ours was using approximately 1.25 litres per 1000 miles. The VX dealer in Edinburgh replaced the complete engine after no fault or reason could be found. This was all carried out under warranty and the problem has been solved.
Maybe be worth you contacting VX again or visiting the dealer again and using some gentle persuasion?
