There's a passage in "The Stand" about that theory and James Staunton. It's compelling. But I find no online references to James Staunton other than an artist by that name and also a bishop by that name. I think King has suckered us in with good storytelling :)

BTW, what a treat it is to read "The Stand" for the first time in 2004.
