If the stone was moving, was it perhaps growing? If so it may be one of these stone roses that we hear about, alternatively it may have been moving in a tumbling manner, in which case it might be a rolling stone. If the motion that your wife observed was infact the last part of a longer sequence culminating in the stone coming to rest as she glanced at it, the phenomenon is probably only rock end roll, but I like it.
