I've just read that scientists have discovered that tomatoes contain a substance that helps the human body cope with sunshine, preventing (or at least reducing the chance of) sunburn. The piece went on to say that olive oil helped the body to retain the substance from the tomatoes.

I noticed in Sardinia that tomatoes and olive oil are staple ingredients of the Mediterranean diet.

So perhaps coming back from holiday with a few edible mementos (sundried tomatoes in olive oil) would help keep that tan in place (although it might add to the negative bank balance!).
