The standard of refereeing has always been an issue. With Scott and Luke graded this year, it means the others who would have otherwise slowly risen through the grades are now thrust into matches that are a higher standard than their experience can cope with. We are fortunate to have any officials, as the abuse is the only thing that stops me personally from picking up a flag or whistle. As games are often covered by this site from a neutral perspective, quite often a fair, honest and most importantly correct ruling brings a 10 minute torrent of abuse and ridicule. It is natural to shout in reaction to a referee error, but to continue to humiliate a touchie or ref in a big group of people is not in the spirit of the game. Quite often I have felt the ref has been within his rights to jump in his car and go home, so unjustified the abuse has been. It is frustrating to cop a bad ruling but overall the refs should be commended for having a go, because if there is no ref there is no game.
