As a driver and wheelchair user myself, I can say that the type of vehicle used depends very much on the nature of the disability. I drive both a saloon car (VW Passat) and a mini van (Vauxhall Sintra 7 seater). Both cars are automatic (In UK not all majority of cars have manual gears). I use a manual wheelchair and an electric one as well. And one more thing.. I can walk a little with my crutches when I wear my calipers. As I cannot make use of my legs, I have hand controls for brake and accelerator. (Sintra also has cruise control but Passat does not). For getting in or out of the cars when I am wearing my calipers, I first get out of my chair by standing up and then turn my back towards the seat before jumping (Sintra) or lowering (Passat) into it. When I do not have my calipers, I do something that perhaps will not be suitable for a heavy person. I seat myself on the arm of the chair and then "pull" myself into the car. It is easier to get into a saloon car as you can raise the armrest and then just slide into the car seat. In UK, you can also have an electric hoist fitted which lifts you out of the chair and into the car. One thing you may want to ask is what happens to the chair when your main character drives the car away. Does she take the chair with her (if so how) or does she have another chair waiting at her destination.
