Subject: Mrs. Mary Looney

Gentlemen and Your Ladies,

I would like to take this time to thank each and every one of you who were able to attend Ms. Mary's funeral Saturday, August 6, and to tell those who were unable to attend that we had you there in spirit. I cannot accurately describe how much it meant to 1st Sgt. Looney to have us there, nor how much I appreciate you all.

The Chapel was packed full. The Grays flanked both sides of the room, standing throughout the entire ceremony. Fellows, I really don't think that was the original intent, but the fact that you would stand and give up your seats rather than be absent from the Chapel not only spoke to all present of the gentlemen I already know you to be, but of your dedication to 1st Sgt. Looney in this terrible time. I salute you, fellows!!

Four shifts stood Guards of Honor at the casket until the ceremony began. Commander Arrick, Jim Benton, Sgt. Ben Hatch, Paul Martin, Bruce Pastusek, Johnathan Walker, Mark Jobin and Jeff Gibbs all did a terrific job and no doubt caused Ms. Mare to look down upon us with a possum grin to beat the band! Each two man Guard approached the casket, presented arms in a slow right hand salute, and took their places at the head and foot. In addition, Mark Jobin and Jeff Gibbs retired the 2nd National from atop the casket. I presented the flag to 1st. Sgt Looney on behalf of everyone, in loving memory to one of the finest Southern Belles we have ever known. Gentlemen, I might add that the flag was donated by Pat Emmerett. After he and I had returned to his house after visiting Ms. Mary on July 4th, he handed me the flag and instructed me to give it to Sgt. Looney at the appropriate time. My deepest appreciation to you again, Pat.

If I miss anyone, please pardon me and please do correct me, but I'd like again to thank all of you who came out in support of the Looneys. Commander Randy Arrick, Sgt. Dan Hastings, Mark Jobin, Sgt. Major Tom and Mrs. Chris McDonough, Sgt. Ben Hatch, Paul Martin, Bill Grasswich, Mike Dawes, Jim Benton, Justin Harris, Jack Harris, Bob Ankrum, David Weaver, Color Sgt. Steve and Mrs. Judy Monroe, Bill Pacena, Johnathan Walker, Steve Oswald, Antony McShane, Jeff Gibbs, Bruce Pastusek, Cpl Tom and Mrs. Judy Bennett, and Pat Emmerett.

Following the ceremony, many of the Grays met at the Tipperary Inn. Fellows, if any of you have never been there and enjoy things Celt, you're missing something good! For an old Irishman like myself, it was plumb Heavenly, and I know without a doubt Mrs. Mary was havin' a pint right along with us!

On Saturday, August 13th, Mrs. Mary's earthly remains will be interred in the family plot in Comfort, Texas. The ceremony is slated to start at 2:00 pm. Fellows, we'll be burning some powder at this one. I understand that the 9th Texas Infantry has postponed the muster they had scheduled for that weekend so that the men of the 9th can participate in the Guard of Honor. I will be there, and I hope each and every one of you can make it as well. If not, I understand, and will look forward to seeing you in future events.
The directions to Comfort are as follows: If you are coming from Austin and have made it to Fredericksburg, take 87 south towards Comfort. After you go under the I-10 overpass continue on about a mile to where the highway splits. Go left and almost immediately veer to the right on Roosevelt which runs between the Security State Bank and Trust and the Chevron station. This is a very short segment of Roosevelt that ends at a stop sign at Hwy 27. Go straight across Hwy 27 to the Shaetter Funeral Home which is one the opposite corner. It is a white frame building. If you get lost their telephone number is (830)-995-3535.
If you are coming from San Antonio (and I hear this is shorter), take I-10 to Comfort. Take the first Comfort exit which is Hwy 27/Business 87. Go about 9/10 of a mile as you are entering Comfort, and you will see Roosevelt. Go left, and Shaettner Funeral Home is on the corner.

To get to the cemetery coming from Austin, after you have gone under the I-10 overpass, continue about 6/10 of a mile to the flashing yellow lights at Ranch Road 473. Turn right (473 west) and continue to the stop sign (behind Super S grocery store, about 2/10 of a mile). Turn right. There is no sign, but this is Front Street. Continue another 2/10 of a mile to Third street. Turn right. Comfort Elementary School will be on the corner. Continue 1/10 of a mile to the Comfort Cemetery entrance.

To get to the cemetery from San Antonio, take the first Comfort exit which is Hwy 27/Business 87. Continue 1.3 miles on 27, and stay to the left when the road splits at the Chevron station. Do not turn right onto 87. Turn right on the street just past the Super S grocery store. There is no sign, but this is Front street. Go about 2/10 of a mile to Third street, and turn right. Comfort Elementary school will be on the corner. Continue 1/10 of a mile to the Comfort Cemetery entrance.

Gentlemen, I will see you there.

Your Obedient Servant,

Lt. Preston Furlow
