Subject: Thank You from the Daughters

Honorable Gentlemen of the Gray,
In the past two weeks I have been privileged to be present, or to be a part of a historic event that was enhanced immeasurably by the presence of The Order of Confederate Gray. It is a bit difficult to fully express the range of emotions one feels when experiencing the courtesy, courtliness, and consideration given by each member of the unit to the individuals present at the event. It is almost as if I have stepped back in time to the period that we endeavor so zealously to protect and preserve.

Each time I witness a ceremony conducted by the Gray, I am struck once again by the feeling of authenticity and sincerity conveyed by each man. That each of the men dresses differently emphasizes to me the credence of their presence, feeling that our ancestors were most likely dressed in homespun garments made by their mothers, wives, sisters, or sweethearts. I continue to be impressed by the professionalism of the unit both individually and collectively.

After the ceremony at Old City Park, I heard many compliments from those in attendance regarding the solemnity of the ceremony, and specifically the Color Guard and the rifle salute. That event would not have been so meaningful and memorable without the participation of the members of the Gray.

I noticed the rifle stuck in the ground by its bayonet before the program began at Ladonia, and wondered what significance it represented. By the time the last soldier placed his mourning band on the rifle, I was almost in tears. It was the singular most moving and meaningful gesture I have seen as part of a dedication ceremony.

As a spectator and not an active participant in the ceremony at Acton Cemetery, I was impressed once again with the precision, professionalism, and dedication of the unit's participation. Without the presence of the Gray, that event would not have been nearly so meaningful.

My personal thanks to those members who willingly give up their weekend days to assist the Daughters. If we can assist the Gray in any of the activities, please let me know.

On behalf of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in District IV, I thank each member of The Order of Confederate Gray for being so dedicated to the Cause that we endeavor to memorialize and protect.

In Southern bonds,
Selma Goswick, Chairman
District IV, United Daughters of the Confederacy
