Members of the Confederate Grays:

Gentlemen,

It is impossible to put into the proper words that which would express my
true emotions from witnessing the Confederate Grays in action this past
weekend. What devotion, what sense of duty, what an understanding of Robert
E. Lee's most sublime word, obligation. All of those were answered this
weekend by the Confederate Grays through their actions. Those actions
demanded knowledge, skill, and no small measure of endurance to complete the
task at hand.

To those whom this correspondence may meet and you did not witness the
Grays on the 18th and 19th of October 2003, let it be known that they held
the field of honor in the work that they did for our ancestors.

On the evening of the 18th, Texas Division Commander Steve Von Roeder and
myself were privileged, along nearly two hundred other attendees, to see
the Grays post the colors for the UDC Harvest Ball at SouthFork near Dallas.
Everyone made mention of their attention to detail and expertise involved in
that commitment. Miles away in Hood County, sentries were to be posted for
the upcoming activities honoring Masonic Confederates buried in Stroud Creek
and Rock Church Cemeteries. What went on there Sunday the 19th will be
imprinted in our memories for long to come. It was such a fantastic display
of brotherhood and men showing their true character in paying homage to our
ancestors that Lieutenant Commander Greg Manning and myself once again
could not find appropriate words to describe how we felt. Then we both
agreed. The only way to express what we saw is the Confederate Gray Motto, "
TO HONOR AND SERVE''.

CONFEDERATE GRAYS. Thank you for upholding the obligation in such fine
fashion. Gentlemen, we as individuals salute you. The Texas Division Salutes
you.

Gary P. Whitfield
2nd Lt. Cmdr
Texas Division SCV
