Subject: Brashear Marker Dedication

To all of my fellow members of the Grays who failed to show at Brashear this past Saturday, you missed an excellent event. As always, we were very well received by all who came in contact with us.

Brashear is only one hour east of Dallas; it's a shame more of you could not find the time in your schedules to participate. When I think of the sacrifices our Confederate ancestors made during the course of the war, in so many instances giving their lives for The Cause, it's sad that we cannot find a few hours to spare on a Saturday to honor their service.

The Brashear cemetery is just east of Sulphur Springs, a mile south of I-30. A few hundred yards from the cemetery is the Brashear Community Hall, where members of the Grays who were in attendance were fed a fabulous lunch of down-home country cooking. There was a very large crowd there for the lunch. In addition to the attendees of the ceremony honoring Pvt. Wiler, 7th Texas, Granbury's Brigade, there were many townspeople present, as there was also a reunion being held that same day.

Following the splendid lunch, descendents and citizens of Brashear gathered at the cemetery for the ceremony. The marker dedication and ceremony was under the auspices of the Capt. Milton Stanhope Austin Chapter 2606 in Rockwall, Texas. Chapter President Diane Little conducted the ceremony, with help, as always, from the Order of Confederate Gray.

Just as we did at the marker dedication in Ladonia a few weeks ago, we repeated the ceremony with the musket planted in the ground by its bayonet, and each member placing a mourning band on the musket. Following this, we fired three volleys at the conclusion of the ceremony. Few if any in attendance at the ceremony had ever seen anything quite like this, and they were fascinated by the members of the Grays, as we participated in the dedication.

As I said, we were very well received, and the descendant families of Pvt Wiler were extremely grateful for our contribution to this moving ceremony honnoring their Confederate ancestor.

We had four rifles, with Randy Arrick and Dan Hastings commanding the honor guard. In addition to serving as a rifleman in the ranks, our chaplain, Leonard Newman, also assisted in the ceremony with prayer. It's a rotten shame we couldn't have had more members present?

For those of us who attended, the gratitude of the families and townspeople present at the ceremony definitely made the effort very worthwhile. Aside from honoring our Confederate ancestors, we always welcome appreciation and recognition for the Grays, and we definitely got that at Brashear!

We hope to see the rest of you at our next ceremony. Please check the message board often, so you'll know what is going on with the Grays.

Forward the colors!

Honor and Serve
