Subject: Correction on ANV flag v.s.Scotland's Flag

Ok guys, I know this is not really Confederate Gray stuff but I’ve have several guys make reference to the ANV battle Flag and it’s connection to Scotland. First off, WRONG, there is NO connection between the two. The only flag that we might be able to associate is that of General McCown (see the flag of the 39th NC). Not to do a dissertation but here is a short version of what can be added to later if you wish.
First, the person who is created with the design is W P Miles and was French hugenot in descent and others involved are Beauregard of French Creole and Johnston an Englishman – these are the ones who pushed the design through after the problems with the 1st National, so much for Celtic heritage! And besides that, 80% of the south was of English descent. Sorry Steve.
Miles first proposed a flag with a St. George cross but drew too much flack. Then he proposed a St. Andrews cross flag in February, 1861 with seven stars. This was rejected as being "too asymmetrical," which it was until more stars were added. Again, the design is his response to the flack over the St. George's cross versions by the Jews and Christians alike. He stated (words to the affect) that his flag was religion neutral (not Scottish). Miles background from South Carolina's secession banner and his brother being the head of the state's Episcopal Church was the St. George's cross.
So what we believe is that he simply turned the cross-sideways to make the cross as stated above less confrontational. And of course he lost his battle for the flag to become the National Flag of the Confederacy.
And of course, we all know the problems at 1st Manassas with the first flag. So Miles again pushed his flag to become a battle flag which both Generals stated was a must. Being on Beauregard staff didn’t hurt either. And the rest is history.
Tom
