Hi,

Although we are on opposite ends of the world, we live in Ireland! I hope that some we could offer some words that would encourage you.

1st Q:
>(i have heard microc is more common in this part of
>the world)
I honestly don't think that statistics work very well in relation to children with such conditions as Microcephaly... In some ways it depends on how the state categorises the child... eg. in Ireland a Child with special needs will fall into one of four categories... Moderate, Mild, Severe or Profound.... & from here they begin to work on the childs disability... Without having to refer to the actual condition itself... This is a point that I've always had problems with.. But to answer your question! I don't think that one area of the world has larger incidences than another...

>I have just had a boy (5 weeks old) diagnosed at birth
>with micro. so far he is feeding and acting like a
>normal baby although seems to be sensitive to the sun
>light arching his head back- does this mean he has
>sight problems?

Our son was diagnosed at aged 9mths & looking back we remember the same things.... But the fact is that Darren had eye problems due to lack of development of the optic nerves.. But we always believed that he could see ... But the question was how he saw it... I believe now, that he was by far more sensitive to light than other children... We took care to help him wwith what he saw & make things more easy for him... But it is a common fact that children with Microcephalic conditions can vary greatly in degrees of disabilities.... Sadly our Darren was on one end of that scale... But I've come accross children who functioned as normal.... But to be honest there is a history of Eye problems (sight problems) with children with Microcephalic conditions... But that may not be the case with your little boy! He could be one of those with good eyesight!!! But at that age it would be rather early to say....

>Also I have been reading 'katies story in the 'links'
>area and noticed that her mum had bad sinus during
>pregnancy, so did i this time (anyone else?)

From what I've heard of from Doctors the actual causes of Microcephalic conditions can be difficult to pin point... In fact up to 60% of children with such conditions, such causes are never discovered... So it may be just a coincidence... But I would recommend that you contct Katies Mom as parents with same experiences help each other...

>my first son is fine and i was wondering if tthey can
>test for the gene?

We have 3 older children & eeach of them showed no signs of the condition... Except for our older son who has slight learning problems... I have read somewhere that 1 child in 4 has some form of microcephalic condition.... Chances are that your little boy is one of those... I'm sure that tests can be carried out if that would ease your worries...

>The last thing was i was wondering if anybody has
>heard of a baby been sucessfully adopted out with m.

I'm not sure on statiscits but we are in the process of looking to foster a special needs child... It is a sad fact here in ireland that there are large shortages of foster parents for special needs parents... I like to believe that God has only given this task to those hom he appointed for this... They are precious children & really open our eyes to the true nature of creation... (my view)

I hope that this helps somewhat! Patrick
