It is almost impossible now to imagine the life that once she had lived. Beyond the recent, so much lay tattered beneath a steel grey cloud, slowly destroying each memory that failed to shine brighter enough, burn hot enough, or sting cold enough. The joys of childhood were no more of consequence, the simplicity of it all just as easily tossed, turned, and consumed by the unforgiving demon that sat behind those dark eyes. Oh that creature sitting proudly atop her cerebellum! The merciless brutality with which it picked from her thoughts the happiest and most innocent of times! And what remained was a bitter core. Pain and passion. Betrayal, confusion, mistrust. Lust is a sin. Pride, Envy, Cupidity. Oh, she’d shown them all at some point or another and that was what now glimmered malignantly in those shadowed ‘pools’ like an oil slick covering the writhing sea.

The general hopelessness, however, did not follow suit with the bounce and spring of the late summer afternoon. The sky was as blue as it could possibly have been with those beautiful cumulo nimbus clouds that decorate so fittingly the autumnal sky. They heat had fluctuated without the day, hot, cold, hot, cold, and if our hero had been of the human sort she would have been at a loss as to what to wear. As it was however, the sturdy bay gave this no thought. Nature had provided quite well with a hide, which, though not impervious, was tough and thick enough to ward off the unsteady temperatures.

But back to the deceptive beast that laughed behind those chilling eyes. And how he laughed! From the very depths of darkness he shuddered with his miserable joy, trembling with his every bite.

And with a piteous cry the bay cannot help but wonder what could be left to take but those wretched few he will not take.

It is the best hidden of thoughts he takes. The most beloved that remain trussed up and gagged behind walls near unbreakable. And like creeping ivory which slowly travels up, slowly engulfs the house, disintegrating brick and mortar, like this he tears down those barricades, those borders, rips away the bulwarking partitions and snatches away the adored, the favored. Leaving no more than a shell with eyes glancing angrily off those subject to their wild gaze.

Now friends, don’t mistake my words. Our poor focus here; do not believe I say she is a demon, for certainly, she is not. Like any other, the bay is a mortal beast of flesh and blood. A mare of a quite ordinary suit and form. It is the torment and terror that have torn her from past relations, which send her now hurtling to the depths of unknown realms.

How is that for a first impression?
