King Arthur legends show that evil is defeated only for a brief, shining moment, before it rears its head again.

I love that concept and have always tried to instill that in my games.

I wonder what socialogical force gave rise to the truncated myth cycle Bob mentioned in his post? Was it DnD itself? I do think that although DnD created a bit of resurgance in fantasty fiction, it also ruined fantasy fiction at the same time, making it all sort of cookie-cutter fantasy.

I think that is also one reason I really like the Harry Potter books - that is not DnD fantasy at all, and no matter what Harry does, things seem to always look bleaker and bleaker and bleaker - he only creates brief moments of victory - then he has to go back home to his aunt and uncle as dark things loom on the horizon.
