Subject: Watch TV on the Internet

In the Future, Everybody Will Watch TV on the Internet

The rapid growth of Internet TV and online radio broadcasting may result in a technological change in the market.

As in the music world, where technology completely changed the industry’s business model, the continual increase in the quality and quantity of online TV and radio channels will affect the future of TV and radio broadcasting.

Until recently, it was difficult to think that someone could follow a live news broadcast or sports event from far away, even from another country, without a television. However, the evolution of radio broadcasting over the Internet has made that possible. In fact, people can now create radio or TV channels on the Internet from their homes—conveniently, inexpensively, and with very little equipment—which enables them to broadcast live TV to the whole world.

Because radio does not require a large bandwidth, creating a high-quality online broadcast is easy. In fact, sometimes, online radio sounds even clearer than radio heard through a conventional receiver. The only inconvenience of Internet radio is its occasional delay of a few seconds.

The visual quality of Internet TV is not comparable to the quality of images seen on modern TV devices, especially since the development of high definition. Despite the lower quality, however, it is possible to watch thousands of TV channels on a simple personal computer. As technology continues to progress and as bandwidth grows larger, higher speeds of data transmission become possible, consequently leading to higher image definition on the Internet.

Perhaps in the future, the Internet will have enough capacity to fulfill the entire world’s TV demand. If this happens, then any TV that connects to the Internet will be able to receive thousands of Internet TV channels without needing to pay any monthly fees. Perhaps then, as it has happened in the music world, television’s business model will be forced to change.
